Analysis of existing magazine (MOJO)
This front cover includes a very vibrant and dominant main image, with the main colour theme being a very simple black and mostly white. The bottom half of the main image being the same colour as the background itself, allows it to create this ‘funky’ look which makes the image appear to be a sort of floating head. This would appeal to the audience as it is very eye catching and would stand out compared to other, more boring magazine front covers. I also think this front cover is linked well to the genre of the main article/image also, as The Cure have a sort of ‘new wave’ and ‘alternative’ style of music so this abnormality in a front cover would appeal to their target audience well. Although the simple colour scheme, they have used red and blue well in certain places across the screen, appearing to have red to indicate higher importance pieces of text, and blue for sort of ‘further information’ on the topic it’s trying to highlight.
The different style of fonts are also meticulously used on this page, for different reasons depending on the topic or circumstance. For example, the main images cover line, is more of a slab serif sort of font which is bold and connotes a sort of powerful and masculine images to the target audience. Whereas on the other hand, some of the other less important text and cover lines, use more of a Modern style of font, which is more elegant and futuristic, and looks aesthetically pleasing for the reader as its not pulling their focus away from the sole purpose of the magazine.
This MOJO contents page uses a very simple, yet effective colour palette. They have used the red hair from the main image, and created an eye-catching way of using the same/a similar colour to make the page numbers stand out more. This is helpful for the audience as it shows as easier navigation because they can very clearly see the page number and what’s included on that page. Also, the way the main image is looking away from the camera/page and doesn’t have direct address could entice the reader further as they may be wondering what the subject of the main image is looking at. The masthead is included at the top of the page, which creates synergy between the front cover and the separate pages, which would also aid MOJO is becoming more known in a way because their readers will always be seeing their main logo no matter what page they’re on. The font sizes on this page vary, this is done because once again it will allow the reader for much more simple and easy navigation around not only just this page, but also the whole magazine. The quote at the bottom of the page also entices the reader further, as it acts as almost a ‘sneak peek’ into what that page is about or is going to include.
